What actually happens when it dies

A hardcore ironman that dies does not stop existing. It loses hardcore status and continues as a regular ironman, keeping its levels, its bank and its progress. Nothing is deleted.

But the thing that made it worth more than a regular ironman is gone permanently, and it cannot be earned back. You are therefore buying two separable things at once: an account with certain levels, and a status that is one mistake away from being worth nothing extra. The second one is most of the price premium.

That asymmetry does not exist anywhere else in account trading. A maxed account you misplay is still a maxed account. A hardcore ironman you misplay is a regular ironman, and the difference is the money you paid.

If you buy one, spend the first sessions doing things well within its capability while you learn what it actually has. The instinct to immediately test it against something difficult is exactly the instinct that costs the status.

Set up two-factor authentication before you play at all, not after the first session. On this account type the gap between buying and securing is the window in which the whole premium can be lost.

Uniquely for hardcore ironman accounts, anyone with access can permanently destroy the status premium simply by dying once — including the previous owner.
